Set between 3 small ponds on a remote cattle ranch in South Texas, Las Tinajas is a design exercise in self reliance and building with nature. The unbuilt project is organized as 5 separate structures physically connected by covered walkways and paths, and visually connected through their placement within the landscape and use of materials.
The project is designed as an off grid ranch. The main structures use limited resources by eliminating concrete slabs and replacing them with crushed limestone and stone flooring given by the site. All of the structural walls and many of the interior walls are constructed of compressed earth block using soil from the property. Repurposed wood beams create the roof structure which is oriented for solar panels and rain water harvesting.
All of the buildings are oriented towards the views and cool breezes of the main pond creating a relaxing sanctuary from active days of ranch life. Furnishings are a combination of hand built pieces, antiques and repurposed items.
